Any Specialist Design Service provided within the discipline:
We were instructed to leave the existing floor joists in place and investigate ways to strengthen them for the proposed loadings. This was both a requirement of the conservation order on the building but also a requirement of the client who wanted to maintain the authentic look of the building internally. We proposed a few schemes that would be non evasive to the building and yet achieve the requirements for the proposed loadings. Some of the proposals included stress skin panels, tension cable through the existing joists and a combination of primary and secondary steels.

Innovative solution provided, if any:
We proposed that primary beams would span alongside the existing floor joists within their depth at the underside of the second floor. Secondary beams would hand intermittently between the primary beams and supporting walls. The location of the secondary beams would be situated along the line of the proposed corridor wall therefore hiding the downstand of the beam. We then hung the first floor joists from the beams at second floor using hangers. The hangers consisted of plates that were welded to the secondary beams and hung through the proposed wall at first floor.
